About this test
To receive an instruction permit in Hawaii, you’ll need to pass a knowledge test of 30 multiple-choice questions. The test is derived from the 2024 Hawaii Drivers Manual, and you’ll need to answer a minimum of 25 of the questions correctly to pass. The test is usually a written exam but is also offered orally at the Kapalama and Wahiawa locations. The knowledge test is $2, if you’re taking the written form, and $10 if you choose to take it orally. To get your permit, you’ll need to provide your birth certificate, social security number, signed consent from both parents, pass a vision test, be fingerprinted, and pay a permit fee of $5-10 on top of your testing fee. When you’ve held your permit for 180 days and are ready for your license, you’ll need to provide proof you’ve taken a driver’s education course and completed a minimum of 50 supervised hours of driving. Your driving test will be $8, and your license or provisional license will be $5-10. Our DMV practice test is a helpful study aide as the questions are based on the same information as those on the real exam.
