Obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License in New York is a bit of a process and you need to be prepared to take a few steps to walk out of the New York DMV with your CDL. First there is the paperwork you need to get together. You’ll want to get together a current valid driver’s license and proof of citizenship (or permanent residency). For this last one, a green card, social security card or birth certificate will do nicely. Then, they also require you present a Medical Examiner’s Certificate that proves you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. However, you cannot get this from just any medical professional. You have to have a licensed medical examiner as listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry to give you your certificate. The certification usually lasts two years, unless the examiner determines you have a condition that needs monitoring, like high blood pressure. Only after presenting this paperwork will the DMV allow you to take the General Knowledge test for your CDL. The exam is a 50 question puzzler that requires you study the official New York commercial driver’s manual. But with all the facts in there, how do you know where to focus your attention?
