Free Online DMV Written Test Practice for New York (2025)
In New York, all drivers, regardless of age, must obtain an instruction permit before applying for a driver’s license. The requirements for an instruction permit include being at least 16 years old and passing two official tests: a vision test and a written knowledge test on driving theory. If you’re under 18, you must also provide signed consent from a parent or guardian.
You may take the New York DMV written test online or at a DMV office. If you’re a high school student, your school may also be authorized to administer the test. All 20 questions on the knowledge test are based on information in the official New York DMV driver’s manual (New York DMV Handbook (NY Driver's Manual) 2025). Four questions are about road signs; the others are about the rules of the road, safe driving techniques, and the laws about alcohol and drug use while driving. The passing score is 70%, but you must correctly answer at least two of the road signs questions. Like the official written test and our first Permit Practice Test, this second New York Permit Practice Test is based on the official driver’s manual. Plus, it’s up to date as of May 2025.
Like the official written test, this practice test is multiple choice. Each question comes with several answer options. You must choose the best or most complete answer. Our AI Assistant can help you with any practice question. If you get stuck on a question, ask the Assistant to rephrase the question, supply a hint, or answer your own questions about driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will immediately tell you the correct answer and explain it. You can retake the practice test as often as you want to master all the material. Each time, the order of the questions will be randomized.
Besides our practice tests, we also offer two PDF “cheat sheets” (though they’re not for actual cheating!): “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter some of these questions on your written test. Each “cheat sheet” includes the correct answer for each question listed.
Finally, check out our own New York Permit Test Study Guide to help you get ready for the day of your official written knowledge test. It addresses how to prepare your mind and body to ace the test, what documents to have with you on the test day, what fees you may have to pay, and which test questions are frequently missed.
