To qualify for this position, you must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement and no airbrake restrictions. A clean driving record, a medical examination, and a background check are also required. Aspiring drivers must complete the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a registered training provider, which is a federal requirement mandated by FMCSA. The official CDL permit test is required for all applicants and it consists of 50 multiple-choice questions based on the official New York DMV commercial driver’s manual (New York CDL Handbook 2026). To obtain certain endorsements, you must also pass their respective knowledge tests. The final step in the licensing process is a skills exam, which includes a pre-trip inspection, a basic control skills test, and a road test.
