First-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants

From freight roadways like I-65 and I-20 to agricultural routes through the Black Belt and commercial traffic out of the Port of Mobile, drivers with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) keep the Heart of Dixie economy moving. In order to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), you must pass the Alabama DMV CDL General Knowledge Test (among other requirements). The official exam contains 50 questions, and applicants must answer at least 40 correctly to earn the required 80% minimum passing score.

You should be prepared for questions about vehicle inspections, basic vehicle control, proper shifting, communicating with other road users, maintaining visibility, managing space, controlling speed, and recognizing hazards. You’ll also need to understand how to deal with distracted and aggressive driving, fatigue, night driving, fog, severe weather, railroad crossings, mountain driving, skids, fires, crashes, and emergency procedures. You’ll also need to know how to deal with the cargo you are carrying, including safe loading, weight distribution, securement, and the inspections required before and during a trip. With such a small margin for error and such a large amount of material to master, our expert-crafted Alabama DMV CDL General Knowledge Practice Tests ensure you pass the official exam on your first attempt.

This exam relies on judgment and conceptual understanding, rather than memorization of facts. That’s precisely why older methods like static pdfs and study guides are less than useful. Our interactive, AI-powered CDL Manual and Challenge Bank™ of questions help you learn as you go. When you incorrectly answer a question, you are provided a response in real time to help you understand why a different response is more appropriate. This learn-as-you-go conceptual understanding of the material is much more effective than other methods. For example, you may need to determine how changing road, traffic, weather, or vehicle conditions affect your stopping distance and safe speed. These aspects of driving cannot simply be memorized.

First-time applicants must obtain a commercial learner permit (CLP) before taking the behind-the-wheel Skills Test. The CLP allows the applicant to practice supervised commercial driving to prepare for the Skills Test. The CLP must be held for at least 14 days, remains valid for 360 days, and cannot be renewed. If it expires, the applicant must retake the required knowledge tests and obtain a new permit. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a Training Provider Registry (TPR) is also required for applicants prior to any skills or endorsement exams. All of this is covered in our practice tests.
