In Arizona, the application process for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) begins with gathering the necessary documents, passing a medical examination, and paying the application fees. All candidates must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license and have at least one year of driving experience. Before taking the CDL skills test, applicants must obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) by passing the official CDL permit test. To add specific endorsements to your CDL, you will need to take additional written tests for those endorsements. Although they are optional for obtaining the CLP, you can take them to expand your career opportunities.
The CDL general knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions based on the official Arizona commercial driver license manual (Arizona CDL Handbook 2026). The CLP is valid for 12 months, and you must wait at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed in FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR) is also mandatory.
