Hold on just one second. Before you are ready to take the Arizona General Knowledge exam to receive your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Learner’s Permit (CLP) there are a few things you should know. For one thing, there is some paperwork that you should make sure to gather before you head to the MVD. Did you already get a Medical Examiner’s Certificate? If not, you’ll need to head to a licensed medical examiner, as listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. They will make sure you are physically qualified to drive commercially. Usually your certificate will last two years, but there may be medical monitoring involved if you suffer from, for example, hypertension or high blood pressure. Also it is imperative that you have proof of citizenship or permanent legal residency before you apply for your CDL. The MVD also requires that you have a current valid driver’s license in order to take the exam. Make sure you have all this information before heading out the door! The other thing you’ll want to have ready is a head full of general knowledge regarding commercial driving in Arizona. The test you are about to face is 50 questions long and you have an hour to finish. More than ten wrong answers lead to a failing grade and the questions can be tricky. If you fail, you’ll have to come another day to try to retake, and who wants the hassle of going back to the MVD. If you want to avoid multiple trips, study up on the official manual as well as this AZ CDL General Knowledge Practice Exam. The questions are very similar (if not identical) to the real thing.
