Welcome to the Golden State! Whether you’re hauling freight along I-5, I-80, or US-101, adding the Doubles/Triples (T) Endorsement to your California Class A CDL can open the door to more job opportunities and higher pay. This endorsement gives you the legal authority to operate double and triple trailer combinations (triples where allowed), competitively setting you apart from drivers without it.
To earn your T Endorsement in California, you must pass the Doubles/Triples Knowledge Test. This test is based on Section 7 of the California Commercial Driver Handbook. It contains 20 multiple-choice questions, of which you must answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting. It’s important to note that California imposes longer delays after repeated failures. After three failed attempts, you must wait 30 days before retesting. Subsequent failures come with even longer wait times. This is precisely why our experts have prepared a state-specific series of practice tests that help ensure you pass your exam on the first attempt!

Our California-specific Doubles/Triples Knowledge Practice Tests mirror the DMV’s official test format. With features added to our practice tests that are scientifically proven to increase retention and decrease preparation time, we have done the homework to ensure your time spent with our practice tests is well spent. You’ll get real-time feedback, hints, and AI-driven study tools to guide you along the way. All practice content is based on the latest California CDL Manual and covers coupling and uncoupling procedures, preventing rollovers and jackknifing, managing the “crack-the-whip” effect, correct braking and safe following distances, and detailed trailer inspection steps.
You’ll also need to make sure any “L” or “Z” air brake restrictions are removed from your CDL. This is because most double and triple trailers in the United States use air brakes. Removal of this restriction requires passing the Air Brakes Knowledge Test and completing a skills test in an air brake-equipped vehicle. Luckily, we offer California-specific Air Brakes Practice Tests to help with this step.
Once you’ve added the T Endorsement, you can expand your qualifications with other endorsements like N (Tank Vehicles), H (Hazardous Materials), X (Tank + Hazmat Combo), P (Passenger Transport), and S (School Bus Operation). We provide free California-specific practice tests for each of these!
