- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 CA commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
This California Hazardous Materials (HazMat) practice test is the second of two in our California-specific series of HazMat materials. It presents you with 30 multiple-choice questions based on Section 9 of the official California Commercial Driver Handbook (California CDL Handbook 2025). Just like the first test, it’s designed to prepare you for the HazMat portion of your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam. You’ll get immediate feedback with explanations of each correct answer, so you can learn as you go instead of the less effective method of waiting until the end of the practice assessment.
Adding the HazMat endorsement (“H”) to your CDL is a smart career move. It broadens your job opportunities and can increase earning potential with carriers that require HazMat drivers. California’s economy makes HazMat work especially relevant. The petroleum industry (Chevron HQ in San Ramon), biotech and pharmaceuticals (Amgen and Gilead Sciences), and chemical manufacturing are among the state’s largest employers of HazMat-endorsed drivers.
The endorsement permits you to legally transport substances the U.S. government deems hazardous, from flammable liquids and corrosives to explosives, radioactive materials, and infectious substances. One of the major objectives behind the detailed process for obtaining a HazMat endorsement is to ensure safety for you, the public, and the environment. As such, the process can be a bit complicated, but rest assured, we have you covered.
There are two major steps to qualify in California. First, you must undergo a federal security threat assessment by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which includes fingerprinting, a background check, and fees. Once this process (which can take weeks, so start studying while you wait ) is successfully completed, you must pass the HazMat Knowledge Test, administered by the California DMV. This test covers federal regulations, communication rules, packaging, loading/unloading, driving and parking rules, and emergency procedures. To pass, you must score at least 80% (24 correct answers out of 30).
Our online practice tests mirror the official DMV test format. They are strategically designed to circumvent all the extraneous information you’ll find elsewhere, simplifying the overall process. Apply for your fingerprints and background check, and use the wait time to study with our practice tests. Once you feel prepared, visit the DMV. Be sure to take the necessary documents, and be prepared to pay any related fees. Pass the test and immediately become eligible for HazMat-related opportunities!
