The Centennial State. The freedom you feel while driving through the Rocky Mountains is unmatched, and so are the career opportunities that open up when you add the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This endorsement gives you access to an entire sector of specialized hauling jobs that would otherwise be unattainable for you. Moreover, these jobs often come with higher pay, and the sheer number of new opportunities adds more stability to your career. If you’re under 21, you won’t yet qualify for the HazMat endorsement. In the meantime, we highly recommend you check out our suite of Colorado-specific study materials, including the CDL Practice Test and the Colorado Air Brakes Practice Test.
With a Hazmat endorsement, you’re authorized to transport regulated materials such as explosives, industrial chemicals, radioactives, certain fuels, and infectious substances. That list may sound intimidating, but the entire certification process is designed around safety first, protecting you, the public, and the environment.

Our online practice tests are built to mirror the official DMV exam, focus only on the necessary information, and give you immediate feedback and detailed explanations when you miss a question. Furthermore, this practice test is just one of three available within the Colorado-specific practice tests we have developed. Check out another here: https://driving-tests.org/colorado/co-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
Your first step is to complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. Since results can take weeks, use that time wisely by preparing for the next step: the DMV HazMat Knowledge Test. This test contains 30 questions, and you’ll need to answer at least 24 correctly to pass. Topics include federal safety regulations, packaging, handling, quantity restrictions, and transport configurations, all based on the official state CDL manual (Colorado CDL Handbook 2026). You are also required to complete the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for Hazardous Materials Endorsement prior to taking the written exam.
In Colorado, Hazmat-certified drivers are in demand in industries ranging from mining and energy to manufacturing and utilities. Explosives, solvents, propane, gasoline, and oil-and-gas production chemicals are common shipments. Companies like Ball Corporation (Boulder) and Xcel Energy (Denver) depend on drivers with this endorsement.
Once you have your TSA clearance, complete ELDT, and feel prepared from having practiced with our relevant practice tests, head to the DMV office, bring your required documents, pay the fees, and pass the test!
We know what it takes to pass. And we’ve got the proof.
