To legally drive combination vehicles in Connecticut, earning a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is essential. There are several steps involved in this process, including passing the Connecticut CDL General Knowledge Test and CDL Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test, earning a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), and ultimately passing a skills test. Additional federal requirements also apply. You must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from an FMCSA-approved provider before you can take the CDL skills test (in a combination vehicle!).
The official Connecticut Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test has 20 multiple-choice questions and covers a variety of topics, like safe driving practices for combination vehicles, air brake systems and usage in combination vehicles, proper coupling and uncoupling procedures, inspection steps, and identification and function of major vehicle parts. To pass the test, you’ll need to answer at least 16 questions (80%) correctly. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting, and you may need to pay a new exam fee. We don’t want you to face a delay or extra fees, so our experts have put together a series of combination vehicle practice tests to help ensure you pass the test on your first attempt.

Our Free Connecticut CDL Combination Practice Test mirrors the format of the state exam and provides instant feedback for each response, which is a more effective learning method than reviewing the assessment notes at the end. Our practice tests are based on the latest Connecticut DMV CDL Manual (Connecticut CDL Handbook 2025). Also, this isn’t the only combination vehicle practice test in our series. Once you’ve aced this one, check out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/connecticut/ct-cdl-combination-test/.
Successfully earning your Class A CDL in Connecticut opens doors across industries, including freight logistics, agriculture, and regional distribution. Some of the major employers in the state that require Class A drivers are Goulet Trucking, Sysco, FedEx, NewTemco Logistics, and CPC Logistics. With access to major trucking routes like I-95, I-84, and I-91, Connecticut Class A CDL drivers are in demand.
You’ll also need to take the Air Brakes knowledge test and a skills test with air brakes to remove that restriction from your CDL. Visit our Air Brakes Practice Tests here: https://driving-tests.org/connecticut/ct-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/. Also, with our expertly designed series of Connecticut endorsement practice tests, you can pursue endorsements like Hazardous Materials (H).
Together, these qualifications strengthen your credentials and, more importantly, your earnings potential in Connecticut.
