If you want to legally operate tractor-trailers or other combination vehicles, you must earn a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This license is required for any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed unit has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 10,000 pounds. There are several steps to obtaining this license. You must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). You’ll need to pass the Delaware DMV General Knowledge Test and Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. You must obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and hold it for a minimum of 14 days before scheduling a CDL skills test. The skills test has three parts: Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and On-Road Driving. You must test in a vehicle representative of the one you’ll drive, including air brakes if applicable.
Topics for the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test include safe driving practices to prevent skids and jackknives, air brake operation in combination vehicles, correct coupling and uncoupling procedures, and inspection steps specific to combination vehicles. The official test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 16 (80%) correctly to pass. That’s quite a lot of tested material and a pretty slim margin for error. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting, and an additional fee may apply. Don’t worry. Our experts have put together the perfect tools to help you quickly learn the material.
Several features set our practice tests apart. Our practice tests mirror the official exam and provide immediate feedback and helpful explanations to help you learn as you go. We cut through the fluff and present only the material you need for the test. We also offer a complete series of combination vehicle practice tests, not just this one. Check out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/delaware/de-cdl-combination-test/.
Class A CDL licenses are required in Delaware’s agriculture (poultry, corn, soybeans), port and shipping in Wilmington, automotive logistics, and construction hauling industries. Major roadways like I-95, US-13, and US-301 help transport Delaware freight by combination vehicles from companies like Reed Trucking Company, Delaware Express Co., Ron English Trucking, Penco Corporation, and C.R. England. Too many employers to ignore!
You can further increase your CDL’s flexibility by removing restrictions such as the air brake restriction and adding endorsements like Hazardous Materials (H). Check out our entire series of practice tests!
