- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 DC commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for July 2025
To become a school bus driver in the District of Columbia, you must hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger “P” endorsement. New drivers must also complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed in the Training Provider Registry (TPR). This is a federal requirement mandated by FMCSA on all US states and the District of Columbia. A valid DOT medical certificate is required to operate a school bus. You must also complete Human Trafficking Awareness Training before receiving a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) or converting an out-of-state CDL.
Once the ELDT is complete, you must pass a 20-question knowledge exam on the safe operation of school buses. This exam is taken at a DMV location, and you must score 80% or higher to pass. All questions are taken from the official DC Commercial Driver License Manual (District of Columbia CDL Handbook), an essential resource that should not be missing from your toolkit. After that, you must pass a road skills test in a school bus. This includes a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, on-road driving, and several procedures specific to school buses.
