First-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants

Are you interested in obtaining a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and joining a workforce that keeps Florida’s economy moving? Do you envision yourself hauling freight along I-4, I-10, I-75, and I-95, along the interior of the state as well as its beautiful coastlines? The Sunshine State is filled with job opportunities for CDL holders. In order to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), which is required prior to testing for your CDL, you must pass the Florida DMV CDL General Knowledge Test (and meet other requirements). The official exam contains 50 questions, and enough must be answered correctly to earn the required 80% minimum passing score. The primary source for test content is the state’s CDL Manual. Often, applicants get their first look at the volume of material needed and become overwhelmed. But don’t worry. Our content experts have designed a series of Florida DMV CDL General Knowledge Practice Tests that focus on the material that truly matters for the official exam. Our practice tests feature AI-powered responses that help you learn as you go, and our Challenge Bank™ is designed to recycle any questions you miss until you answer them correctly. This repetition reinforces retention and helps ensure you pass your official exam on the first attempt. Our practice test materials also feature an interactive CDL Manual and an end-of-session review that highlights any topics that need further study.

Topics covered include vehicle inspections, basic vehicle control, proper shifting, and communicating with other road users. You’ll also need to know how to maintain visibility, manage space, control speed, and recognize hazards. Other topics include distracted and aggressive driving, fatigue, night driving, fog, hot weather, severe rain, railroad crossings, mountain driving, skids, fires, crashes, and emergency procedures. The list goes on, but you can rest assured that our study tools will fully prepare you with the deep conceptual understanding you’ll need to pass the official exam.

Once you earn your CLP, you must hold it for a minimum of 14 days before taking your behind-the-wheel Skills Test, the passing of which is required to obtain your CDL. The Skills Test includes vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road portions (in that order). There are other requirements discussed in our preparatory materials. Once you have a handle on this practice test, check out another from our series: https://driving-tests.org/florida/fl-cdl-practice-test/.

Many CMVs use air brakes, and you may not operate one without passing the Air Brakes Knowledge Test and Skills Test (in an air brake-equipped vehicle). Check out our Florida DMV Air Brakes Practice Tests if this is consistent with your driving plans: https://driving-tests.org/florida/fl-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
