Florida requires every new school bus driver to pass the Florida DMV CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Test. This exam, along with the mandatory Passenger "P" endorsement knowledge test and the hands-on skills test in a school bus, ensures Florida’s drivers are properly trained and vetted. Florida also places a No Passengers in CMV Bus restriction on Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLPs) with the S or P endorsement, which means learner drivers may operate only an empty bus until they are fully licensed, with the exception of their instructor or skills test administrator.
The School Bus "S" Knowledge Test focuses on the areas where statistics show the greatest danger: loading and unloading children. The "danger zones" around the bus are the most common locations for student injury and require continual mirror use, hazard scanning, and stopping procedures that align with strict protocol. The test evaluates a driver’s understanding of controlled stops, blind-spot management, mirror alignment, and careful observation of children approaching or leaving the bus. It also examines how students, their clothing, and/or their bags can be caught in handrails as they enter or exit the vehicle, and what steps the driver must take to prevent and respond to these situations.
Other tested topics include handling emergencies, railroad crossings, evacuation procedures, and student discipline. The state’s CDL program also requires compliance with Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) standards for all new S endorsement applicants. Before any child steps onto a bus, drivers must also clear fingerprint-based background checks and meet medical certification requirements. Florida school bus drivers must maintain medical documentation on file with Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), and public and private school bus drivers must satisfy Florida Board of Education medical standards.
Our Florida School Bus "S" Practice Tests mirror the structure of the official exam. This familiarizes the test-taker with the format, eliminating any potential surprises on test day. AI-driven instant feedback per response, the interactive CDL manual, and the Challenge Bank are features that ensure applicants pass on their first attempt. (The Challenge Bank revisits any questions missed until mastery is achieved.) The "results page" highlights the test topics that applicants should revisit.
