- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 IL commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) not only adds versatility to your skillset but, more importantly, can increase your earning potential. This endorsement opens doors to jobs in high-demand industries like fossil fuel transport, manufacturing, agriculture (fertilizers and pesticides), pharmaceuticals, and even nuclear energy. (Illinois has more nuclear power plants than any other state in the country.) Without the endorsement, you simply don’t have access to those higher-paying positions.
The Hazmat endorsement authorizes drivers to transport materials the U.S. government classifies as hazardous. These range from explosives and certain fuels to industrial chemicals, radioactive materials, and infectious substances. Because of the risks, the endorsement process contains multiple steps to ensure safety for you, the public, and the environment.
The federal minimum age for interstate Hazmat transport is 21. To earn the endorsement, you must complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprint-based background check, make certain your Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is complete, and pass the DMV Hazmat knowledge test. The test is based on the official state CDL manual and includes 30 questions on regulations, packaging, handling, quantity limits, and proper transport configurations. A passing score requires at least 24 correct answers (80%). All test questions are based on the official state CDL manual (Illinois CDL Handbook 2025).
With so much material to be tested on, our team of experts has simplified the process! Our online practice tests cut through the noise and focus only on what you need to know. They’re designed to mimic the structure and content of the official DMV exam and provide instant feedback for each practice test response. Instant feedback has been shown to improve retention versus other tools that save their assessment until you have completed the test. This practice test is also one of three in our Illinois-specific series of study material. Check out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/illinois/il-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
Final Steps
Once you’ve met the TSA and ELDT demands and you feel ready to test, visit the DMV, bring the required documents, pay the fees, and take the test.
