Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) not only adds versatility to your skillset but, more importantly, can increase your earning potential. This endorsement opens doors to jobs in high-demand industries like fossil fuel transport, manufacturing, agriculture (fertilizers and pesticides), pharmaceuticals, and even nuclear energy. (Illinois has more nuclear power plants than any other state in the country.) Without the endorsement, you simply don’t have access to those higher-paying positions.
The Hazmat endorsement authorizes drivers to transport materials the U.S. government classifies as hazardous. These range from explosives and certain fuels to industrial chemicals, radioactive materials, and infectious substances. Because of the risks, the endorsement process contains multiple steps to ensure safety for you, the public, and the environment.
The federal minimum age for interstate Hazmat transport is 21. To earn the endorsement, you must complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprint-based background check, make certain your Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is complete, and pass the DMV Hazmat knowledge test. The test is based on the official state CDL manual and includes 30 questions on regulations, packaging, handling, quantity limits, and proper transport configurations. A passing score requires at least 24 correct answers (80%). All test questions are based on the official state CDL manual (Illinois CDL Handbook 2025).
