If you’re preparing to drive combination vehicles (such as tractor-trailers) in Indiana, one of several steps is passing the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. This is required to qualify for a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). According to the Indiana CDL Manual, you must have a Class A CDL to operate combination vehicles whose gross combination weight rating (GCWR) is 26,001 pounds or more, and the towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds (Indiana CDL Handbook 2025).
The Indiana Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test has 20 multiple-choice questions. You must correctly answer at least 16 (80%) to pass. Failure to pass the test will result in a wait time of at least one business day before retesting, and you may face a retest fee. Topics that may be tested include combination vehicle safety, preventing trailer skids and jackknives, air brakes in combination vehicles, coupling and uncoupling procedures, and vehicle inspection requirements.
Our free Indiana CDL Combination Practice Test is an incredible tool for preparing for the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. It mirrors the format and topics found on the official exam and is based on the most recent CDL Manual. Our practice tests include immediate feedback on each response and explanations that speed the learning process and help ensure you pass your official exam on the first attempt. We also have more than just this particular practice test, so check out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/indiana/in-cdl-combination-test/.
Before taking the official CDL Skills Test, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from an FMCSA-approved training provider listed on the Training Provider Registry (TPR). After completing your ELDT, passing the CDL General Knowledge Test (we have tools for that, too!), and holding your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days, you’ll be eligible for the skills test to earn your Class A CDL.
Industries that rely on CDL Class A drivers include agriculture and livestock transport, construction and heavy equipment hauling, manufacturing and logistics, and long-haul and regional freight. Major Indiana roads, including Interstates 65, 69, 70, and 74, are the lifeline for employers like FedEx Freight, TMC Transportation, and regional distributors that rely on drivers with Class A CDLs.
Practically all combination vehicles use air brakes, so passing the Air Brakes Knowledge Test to remove restrictions from your CDL is crucial. You should also consider adding endorsements to your CDL, like Hazardous Materials (H), the test for which can be practiced here: https://driving-tests.org/indiana/in-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
