Passing the CDL Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test is required to earn a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and legally drive combination vehicles in Iowa. Other requirements include passing a skills test in a combination vehicle and Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-approved provider.
The state’s Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you must score at least 80% to pass. If you fail the exam, you must wait at least one business day and may have to pay a retest fee. Our Free Iowa CDL Combination Practice Tests help eliminate that possibility with their scientifically proven design that helps you pass on your first attempt.
Based on the official IA CDL HandbookHandbook‑based (2025) + exam‑taker feedback
Based on the most recent Iowa CDL Manual, our practice test provides immediate feedback and hints and mimics the format and content you’ll face on the real exam. Topics include safe driving practices for combination vehicles, braking systems (especially air brakes) in combination vehicles, proper coupling and uncoupling procedures, inspection procedures, and the major parts of combination vehicles.
Earning your Class A CDL increases your marketability for Iowa’s jobs. Major trucking corridors include I-80 (connecting Davenport, Iowa City, Des Moines, and Council Bluffs), I-35 (running north-south through Des Moines), and I-29 (running along western Iowa). Major industries that depend on Class A CDL drivers include agriculture, food production, manufacturing, ethanol and biodiesel, grain transport, logistics, and construction. Employers include Tyson Foods, Fareway, Hy-Vee, FedEx Freight, UPS, CRST, TMC Transportation, and Walmart Distribution centers. With such a wide variety of industries and businesses operating in Iowa, securing your Class A license is a powerful step toward expanding your career opportunities.
Other endorsements to consider include Tanker (N), Hazardous Materials (H), and Doubles/Triples (T). Having these certifications adds substantial credibility (and marketability) to your license. You should also prepare for and take the Air Brakes Test if you haven’t already, since most tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, and combination vehicles use air brake systems. We provide an entire suite of Practice Tests specifically designed to help you learn the material for each of these and pass their respective exams on your first attempt.
