To operate combination vehicles such as tractor-trailers in Iowa, drivers must pass the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test, one of several requirements for earning a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Without a Class A CDL, you cannot legally drive a combination vehicle whose gross combination weight rating (GCWR) is 26,001 lbs or more and the towed unit’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeds 10,000 lbs. The Hawkeye State provides wonderful opportunities for Class A licensed drivers, and we have exactly what you need to pass this test!
In addition to the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-approved training provider and pass the CDL General Knowledge Test before scheduling your CDL skills test. Iowa’s ELDT rules align with federal requirements and require completion and verification through the Training Provider Registry (TPR). All of these steps are necessary for the Class A license.

The Iowa Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test includes 20 multiple-choice questions, and you’ll need to answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass. If you fail, you must wait one business day and may be required to pay a retesting fee. This is where our suite of practice tests comes in. Our Free Iowa CDL Combination Practice Tests mirror the official exam. They provide instant feedback based on the latest Iowa CDL Manual, allowing you to learn as you go! Topics include safe driving and inspection practices for combination vehicles, coupling and uncoupling procedures, air-brake systems (required for most tractor-trailers), preventing trailer skids and jackknives, and the major parts of combination vehicles. Major Iowa employers hiring Class A drivers include CRST, Fareway, FedEx Freight, Hy-Vee, TMC Transportation, Tyson Foods, UPS, and Walmart Distribution Centers.

How we make exam‑like questions
We mirror recurring themes (e.g., right‑of‑way traps, sign look‑alikes) and use similar distractors and wording styles.
What we don’t do
We don’t collect or publish actual test items and we’re not affiliated with DOT.
