- Based on 2025 IA commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy

Boost your trucking career in Iowa by adding the Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement to your CDL. This certification opens the door to higher-paying jobs, steady demand, and a wider range of opportunities across the Hawkeye State. Employers value drivers with the HazMat endorsement, who can legally transport dangerous cargo that the federal government has deemed hazardous. Examples are fuel, chemicals, and certain agricultural products. And that added value can mean higher pay for you!
In Iowa, HazMat drivers are in demand in multiple industries. Iowa is a leader in corn, soybeans, and livestock production as well as biofuels, food processing, and manufacturing. Companies like CF Industries (Sergeant Bluff), Ag Partners (Albert City), POET Bioprocessing, and Casey’s General Stores (headquartered in Ankeny) rely on certified drivers to move products safely. Common hazardous cargoes in Iowa include anhydrous ammonia, petroleum products, ethanol and biodiesel, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. These are just some of the added opportunities you’ll have access to with a HazMat endorsement.
To earn the endorsement, you must first complete all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. Once that requirement is satisfied, there are two major steps remaining: a TSA fingerprinting and background check, and passing the Iowa DOT HazMat Knowledge Test. The TSA results can take weeks, so it’s best to submit your paperwork immediately and use that waiting period to prepare for the knowledge test, which is based on Iowa (Iowa CDL Handbook 2025). The exam includes 30 questions and requires a minimum passing score of 80% (at least 24 correct answers). It covers federal regulations, proper handling and packaging of hazardous materials, labeling, quantity limits, and safe transport procedures.
To make studying easier, we’ve created Iowa-specific practice tests that mirror the official exam and cut out unnecessary information you’ll find in other study resources. This practice test is just one of several that we offer. Check out another from our Iowa-specific series here: Iowa CDL HazMat Practice Test.
After passing the TSA background check, you’ll bring your documents to the Iowa DOT, pay the required fees, and complete the exam.
The HazMat endorsement is one of the smartest investments you can make in your trucking career. While you’re at it, you should consider adding other valuable endorsements to your CDL. Check out our entire series of Iowa specific practice tests, including general CDL tests, Air Brakes restriction removal tests (Iowa CDL Air Brakes Test), and additional endorsements!
