Did you know that Dora Colvin from Udall, Kansas, became the first woman to get a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in the state? She completed the licensing process in 1965 and went on to drive over 2 million miles throughout her career, inspiring many other women to pursue a career in commercial driving and break barriers in the trucking industry. Nobody is born an expert driver. Commercial driving is a skill that takes time, practice, and effort to develop. If you want to have a successful career in this field like Dora, you can begin the licensing process as soon as you meet the minimum qualifications.
In Kansas, you must be at least 18 to drive within the state (intrastate) or 21 to drive across state lines (interstate). You must have a valid driver’s license, pass a DOT medical exam, provide identification documents, and pay the application fees. After scoring 80% or higher on the official written knowledge exam, you’ll be issued a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), which you must hold for at least 14 days while practicing with a qualified CDL holder. During this time, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-approved training provider.
You’ll need a Class A CDL to drive any combination vehicle over 26,000 lbs, where the trailer alone is over 10,000 lbs. Because this class of license involves handling larger and more complex vehicles, you must also pass the official combination vehicles knowledge exam. Most semi-trucks in Kansas are equipped with air brakes. To operate them legally, you’ll need to remove the L restriction from your CDL by passing the official air brakes knowledge test.
Our Kansas CDL Class A Practice Test makes it easier for you to master commercial driving theory. This intuitive tool is up to date as of November 2025 and has 93 multiple-choice questions. All questions are based on the official Kansas Commercial Driver’s License Manual (Kansas CDL Handbook 2025), which you should study carefully during your learning phase. To pass the official written knowledge test on your first try, it’s important to use this practice test regularly. You get unlimited attempts and 24/7 to practice as often as your schedule allows, anytime, anywhere in the world.
