You must be at least 18 to qualify for a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) in Kentucky, but you won’t be able to transport passengers, carry hazardous materials, or drive professionally across state borders until you turn 21. All applicants must pay the licensing fees, provide identification documents, and pass a vision screening. If you plan to engage in non-excepted commerce, you must also pass a medical exam.
Scoring 80% or higher on the official General Knowledge Test will grant you a CLP (Commercial Learner’s Permit). You can use this permit to practice driving commercial vehicles under the supervision of a full CDL holder. Before you can take the CDL skills tests, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). This training must be administered by a provider listed in FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR).
