- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 LA commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
Louisiana presents a lot of wonderful job opportunities for commercial drivers. Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your CDL immediately boosts your marketability and job opportunity pool, just what you need for higher earning potential!
The endorsement allows you to transport materials that the U.S. government has classified as hazardous. Because of the heightened responsibility, the process for endorsement includes several safeguards to protect you, the public, and the environment. After you’ve met the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements, you must submit fingerprints and a background investigation to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Results may take several weeks, so you’ll want to be strategic here. Apply for the TSA check and then use the wait time to study for the final requirement: passing the Louisiana OMV HazMat Knowledge Test. This test covers federal regulations, substance handling, packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations. To pass, you must earn a minimum score of 80% on Louisiana’s 30 questions exam (Louisiana CDL Handbook 2025).
Hazardous cargo in the Pelican State frequently includes crude oil and petroleum products (gasoline, diesel), industrial chemicals such as benzene and chlorine, compressed gases like natural gas, fertilizers like anhydrous ammonia and ammonium nitrate, and hazardous waste from Louisiana’s petrochemical industry. Major employers relying on HazMat drivers include ExxonMobil (Baton Rouge), Dow Chemical (Plaquemine), Entergy (New Orleans), Sasol (Westlake), and Shell Oil (Norco). Without the HazMat endorsement, you won’t be able to legally transport these cargoes, and this pool of jobs will be closed to you.
