If you’re thinking about driving tractor-trailers or other combination vehicles in Maine, you’ve come to the right place to get started. There are several steps before you can obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and legally operate combination vehicles.
You must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). You’ll need to pass the Maine CDL General Knowledge Test to obtain your Commercial Learner Permit (CLP), which you must hold for at least 14 days before you can take your hands-on skills test in a combination vehicle. You’ll also need to pass the CDL Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test.
The Maine Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. In order to pass, you must answer at least 16 correctly (80%). If you fail, you’ll need to wait one business day and pay a retest fee before trying again. Our CDL experts have designed a series of free Maine Combination Practice Tests to help you succeed the first time. These tests replicate the official format and provide instant feedback to improve your retention and speed the learning process. Got this one under wraps? Try another practice test here: https://driving-tests.org/maine/me-cdl-combination-test/.
Our practice tests focus only on the information you’ll need for the real exam. Topics covered include safe driving and braking practices, air brake systems in combination vehicles, coupling and uncoupling procedures, inspection steps, and how to prevent trailer skids and jackknives.
Industries requiring drivers with a Class A CDL include logistics, agriculture, construction, and long-haul transport. With major routes such as Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1, and State Route 9, and major employers like ABF Freight System, Inc, Chapman Trucking, Inc., Hutchins Trucking Co., R.C. Moore, and UPS, Maine offers plenty of opportunities for Class A drivers.
A must for you is to also pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test. Until you pass it, your Class A CDL will be virtually worthless. Most combination vehicles are air brake-equipped, and you’ll be restricted from driving that vehicle type. Prepare here: https://driving-tests.org/maine/me-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
Also, consider adding endorsements to increase your job potential. Maine offers tests for Hazardous Materials (H), Tanker (N), and Doubles/Triples (T). Each endorsement expands your earning potential and career options. Get started here: https://driving-tests.org/maine/me-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
Whatever your Maine CDL goal, our practice tests help you get there faster!
