- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 ME commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for August 2025
If you’re looking to operate double or triple trailer combinations, you’ve come to the right place to begin. You’ll need to add a Double/Triple (T) Endorsement to a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The first step is passing the General Knowledge and Combination Vehicles knowledge tests. Once you have your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) or Class A CDL, you’re eligible to take the Maine CDL Double/Triple Trailers Knowledge Test. Yes, you can go ahead and take the double/triple endorsement exam with your CLP.
The official exam is administered by the Maine DMV and is based on the most recent Maine CDL Manual. The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and a passing score requires at least 16 correct answers (80%). That allowance of four missed responses doesn’t leave much room for error. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day to retest, and additional fees may apply after multiple failed attempts. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen to you.
Our Free Maine CDL Double/Triple Trailers Practice Tests are designed to help you pass on your first attempt. Each practice test mimics the structure of the official DMV exam and includes real-time feedback, hints, and AI-powered learning tools that blow away standard study guides. All content is based on the Maine CDL Manual and covers coupling and uncoupling procedures and preventing jackknifing, as well as the “crack-the-whip” effect. The practice tests also cover safe following distances and inspections (including brake checks) of multiple trailers.
Maine’s primary roadways, like I‑95, US‑1, and US‑202, are crucial links to the rest of the Northeast. Major carriers, such as FedEx Ground, XPO Logistics, and Old Dominion Freight Line, often seek Maine-based drivers who are certified to pull doubles. Achieving this certification raises your level of options and income.
Most doubles and triples use air brake systems. You must also pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test (and complete a skills test in a vehicle with air brakes). Otherwise, an “L” or “Z” restriction will appear on your license, making it illegal to drive air brake-equipped vehicles and severely limiting your overall marketability.
Our Maine-specific series of CDL endorsement practice tests includes tools for Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, and a host of additional endorsements to further increase your versatility and driving options. Be sure to check out each one and be ready for any job that comes your way!
