There are three classes of Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs). The Class A CDL allows you to operate commercial vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, in which the towed vehicle weighs over 10,000 pounds. This CDL class is most suitable for aspiring commercial drivers interested in driving semi-trucks and tractor-trailers.
A Class B CDL lets you operate a single vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, or any vehicle towing another vehicle that does not exceed 10,000 pounds. With this type of license and the appropriate endorsements, you can drive large passenger buses, full-size school buses, box trucks, and straight trucks.
You should consider getting a Class C CDL if you plan to drive passenger vans and small buses. This license class is required to operate any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver). You’ll also need a Class C CDL to drive vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
