- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 ME commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
Adding a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Maine Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a fast way to expand your job opportunities and increase your earning potential. Whether for transporting explosives, pulp and paper chemicals, industrial fuels, or radioactive materials, employers across the Pine Tree State need qualified drivers, and they often pay a premium to get them. The requirements for this endorsement are substantial for good reason, and you’ve come to the right place to prepare!
The endorsement process has several steps to ensure your safety and that of the public and the environment. First, you must complete all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. The second step is submitting to a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. Results can take weeks, so while you wait, use the time to prepare for the third major step: the Maine HazMat Knowledge Test. This test requires a minimum passing score of 80% on 30 questions (Maine CDL Handbook 2025).
The test covers federal regulations, safe handling, packaging rules, and transport requirements. With such a wide variety of topics and the detailed understanding required, our team of experts has made the studying process much easier for you. Our online HazMat practice tests are designed to mimic the official exam and focus only on the material you need, weeding out the vast amounts of unnecessary information you will find in other study materials. Each response is met with a detailed description of why it is or is not the correct answer. This immediate feedback is scientifically shown to trump other study methods that provide such feedback at the end (or not at all).
Maine’s major industries, including Verso Corporation (Jay), Irving Oil (Portland), Sappi North America (Skowhegan), and Cianbro Corporation (Pittsfield), depend on CDL drivers with HazMat endorsements. The endorsement doesn’t just add another credential; it opens the door to more job security and higher pay.
Once your TSA approval comes back and you’re fully prepared for the knowledge test, simply take the required documents and fees to the DMV and pass the test. Then you’ll be ready to start driving HazMat loads across Maine’s mountains in the west, narrow backroads in the north, and coastal shipping roadways.
Be sure to check out our entire suite of Maine-specific practice tests, including those for Air Brakes restriction removal (Maine CDL Air Brakes Test), general CDL training, and Combination Vehicle.
