To operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) equipped with air brakes in Maryland, you must pass the Maryland MVA CDL Air Brakes Knowledge Test and the Skills Test in an air brake-equipped vehicle. The tests are based on the MVA Commercial Driver’s License Manual, which is filled with information, new terms, rules and regulations, procedures, labels, protocols, and much more. This daunting amount of information can quickly overwhelm anyone preparing to be tested on the material. But you must pass these tests in order to remove the “L” restriction from your CDL, which prohibits you from driving any vehicles with air brakes.

The official Air Brakes Knowledge Test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, and a minimum score of 80% is required to pass. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting, and a retest fee may apply. With so much material to learn and potential delays and additional fees, you’ve certainly come to the right place to prepare with our series of Air Brakes Practice Tests!

Our Free Maryland CDL Air Brakes Practice Tests mirror the official exam format. Each response includes immediate feedback, AI-driven explanations, and hints as needed to reinforce retention. Our practice tests also feature a Challenge Bank that recalls any missed questions until you have proven mastery of all the test material. Once you’ve mastered this practice test, try another here: https://driving-tests.org/maryland/md-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.

About the Maryland CDL

Maryland’s coastal plains highways, urban interstates, and Appalachian routes are part of an infrastructure designed for your success. From the Port of Baltimore (one of the busiest shipping hubs on the East Coast) to major roadways like I-95, I-70, and I-83, air brake-qualified drivers are in constant demand across the state. Major employers that rely on air brake-qualified drivers include Amazon distribution centers, federal contractors, and regional logistics carriers, as well as employers tied to the state’s major industries, such as agriculture, biotechnology, and manufacturing.

Once you’ve earned your air brakes qualification, consider additional endorsements to expand your career options, including N – Tanker, H – Hazardous Materials, and T – Doubles/Triples. We have Endorsement Practice Tests to help: https://driving-tests.org/maryland/md-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/. Also, since most combination vehicles use air brakes (and you’re taking care of that test now), consider preparing for the CDL Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test, which is one of the key steps toward earning a Class A License, a major career boost once obtained! Check out one of our Combination Vehicles Practice Tests here: https://driving-tests.org/maryland/md-cdl-combination-test/.
