MD CDL General Knowledge Exam Simulator 2025

The required General Knowledge test for the Maryland Commercial Driver’s License is not a gimme. It’s 50 relatively high level, multiple-choice, questions that are more than just common knowledge. You only have an hour to take the test and need to get over 40 right (an 80%) to pass. Fail and you’ll have to come back to the MVA (and take a number and wait in line) another day. That’s why you’ll want to study the concepts pretty closely to make sure you have all the details down. That means getting the official Maryland commercial driver’s manual and giving it a good read and then taking some practice tests until you are confident you can successfully pass the exam in person. Our practice exams have questions that look and feel like the real thing, and with our hint system and score tracking it’s easy to see where you need to focus your studying efforts. But the test isn’t the only hurdle to your CDL — before they even let you take the exam, you need to get your paperwork in order. There are three main elements you’ll need for the Maryland DMV. First you need a valid current driver’s license and proof of citizenship or permanent legal residency. For this last one, a green card, social security card, or birth certificate are best. But you also need proof that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. For this the Maryland MVA asks that you present a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Also known as a DOT card, the certificate can be obtained only from a licensed medical examiner as listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. The certificate is usually good for two years, unless you have a condition that needs monitoring, like high blood pressure. Once you have all that together, along with everything you’ve prepared mentally, you should be all set for success. Start preparing today by studying our CDL General Knowledge Exam Simulator!
