The required General Knowledge test for the Maryland Commercial Driver’s License is not a gimme. It’s 50 relatively high level, multiple-choice, questions that are more than just common knowledge. You only have an hour to take the test and need to get over 40 right (an 80%) to pass. Fail and you’ll have to come back to the MVA (and take a number and wait in line) another day. But you also need proof that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. For this the Maryland MVA asks that you present a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Also known as a DOT card, the certificate can be obtained only from a licensed medical examiner as listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. The certificate is usually good for two years, unless you have a condition that needs monitoring, like high blood pressure.
