- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 MD commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
Your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will get a substantial upgrade when you add a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement. Without it, you are legally prohibited from hauling explosives, certain fuels, radioactive materials, industrial chemicals, and infectious substances. With such a large sector of commercial driving and the potentially higher-paying opportunities it provides, why would you not add the HazMat endorsement?
Because of the potential dangers, the application process emphasizes safety: safety for you, safety for others, and safety for the environment. For this reason, obtaining this endorsement requires you to be at least 21 years of age and complete three major steps. First, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. The second step is a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. These results can take weeks to arrive, so use this time to study for the third and final step: the MVA HazMat Knowledge Test. This test covers federal regulations, hazardous substance handling, packaging, and transport rules. Maryland’s test has 30 questions, and you’ll need to score at least 80% to pass (Maryland CDL Handbook 2025).
A wide range of materials can be hauled with this endorsement, including agricultural and manufacturing chemicals, gasoline and propane, hazardous waste, medical gasses, and materials connected to the state’s chemical and defense industries. Major employers in the Old Line State, like Lockheed Martin, Marriott International, and Baltimore Gas and Electric, rely on drivers certified to carry such loads. With all of these jobs off-limits to drivers without the HazMat endorsement, it’s a good idea to pass this test!
We’ve made preparing for the official exam easier. Our online practice tests mirror the official MVA exam and provide immediate explanations for missed questions, helping you learn as you go.
