The Great Lakes State places the safety of its students at the very top of its priorities. For this reason, if you would like to be a school bus driver, you must meet federal and state training and licensing standards before ever transporting a single child. One of several major steps in that process is passing the Michigan CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Test. A minimum score of 80% is required, and there is a wide range of topics on the exam. You’ll also need to pass the Passenger "P" Endorsement Exam and a hands-on skills test conducted in a school bus. The Secretary of State will allow no driver to move forward until they meet all medical, qualification, and background-check requirements. The state also follows the national rule that a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) holder cannot carry passengers (with the exception of a supervising instructor) until a driver passes the skills test and all additional requirements.
With our practice tests, our experts have focused on the necessary official test topics, including loading and unloading procedures, visibility around danger zones, and mirror use. The spaces surrounding the bus are where most injuries to students occur, and Michigan expects its drivers to maintain constant awareness of blind spots, approach paths, and student movement. The test also evaluates your understanding of how to prevent students from being caught on handrails, how to manage stops, and how to manage student behavior inside the bus. Other topics include controlled stopping and securement of the bus at railroad crossings. You’ll also need to be well aware of the protocol for post-trip inspections to check for damage and make sure no student remains inside. That’s a lot, but our practice tests cover it all!
