If you’re preparing to drive combination vehicles (such as tractor-trailers) in Minnesota, a critical step is passing the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. This test is required to qualify for a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). You’ll need a Class A CDL to operate combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, whose towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds (Minnesota CDL Manual).
Topics covered on the Minnesota Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test include combination vehicle safety, preventing trailer skids and jackknifes, air brakes in combination vehicles, coupling and uncoupling procedures, and vehicle inspection requirements. It consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. You’ll need a minimum score of 80% to pass (16 or more correct responses). That can feel like a daunting amount of material. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting and may be required to pay a retest fee, adding even more pressure to the testing situation.
But don’t worry. Our free Minnesota CDL Combination Practice Test mirrors the format and topics found on the real exam. It’s based on the most recent Minnesota CDL Manual and includes immediate feedback, hints, and answer explanations. We have carefully designed our practice test(s) to speed the learning process and increase material retention.

Passing the Combination Vehicles Test and earning your Class A CDL will enhance your job prospects in Minnesota’s transportation sector. Industries that rely on CDL Class A drivers include agriculture and livestock transport, construction and heavy equipment hauling, manufacturing and logistics, and long-haul and regional freight. Major corridors in the state include Interstates 35, 90, and 94, which provide access to national routes. Employers such as FedEx Freight, TMC Transportation, and regional distributors rely on drivers with Class A CDLs.
Practically all combination vehicles use air brakes, so passing the Air Brakes Knowledge Test is vital. This step removes the “L” or “Z” restriction from your CDL, which would otherwise prevent you from operating air brake-equipped vehicles. You may also consider adding endorsements such as T (Doubles/Triples), N (Tank Vehicles), H (Hazardous Materials), and X (Tank and Hazmat combined). Each added endorsement increases your job prospects and marketability.
