Whether you intend to drive school buses or heavy trucks, the first step is to get a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). As you begin your learning phase, you should study the various aspects of commercial driving described in the official Minnesota commercial driver license manual (Minnesota CDL Handbook 2025).
In Minnesota, the DVS requires all applicants to pass a 50-question general knowledge exam before they can obtain a CLP. This is a mandatory test for all CDL classes, and its purpose is to evaluate your knowledge of traffic laws, cargo management, emergency procedures, vehicle inspections, and safety regulations. You must score at least 80% to pass. You’ll be on a time limit, leaving little room for error. Our Minnesota CDL General Knowledge Exam Simulator lets you practice under realistic conditions. This tool has been designed to closely reflect the content and format of the official CDL permit test, except for a timer, which we have omitted for your convenience. You must answer 50 multiple-choice questions and score 80% or higher to pass. If you make too many mistakes, the test ends immediately.
