About this test
The Minnesota DVS is ready to give you your Commercial Driver’s License, after you take on just a few tasks. The first one you’ll likely want to complete is getting a Medical Examiner’s Certificate to prove that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. But you can’t get it just anywhere. You need to visit a licensed medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. They can give you a certificate that usually lasts two years, unless you have a condition they feel like needs monitoring, like high blood pressure or diabetes. Once you’ve crossed that hurdle, you need to prepare the other paperwork you’ll need at the DVS. Without a current valid driver’s license and proof of permanent residency — like a social security card, birth certificate or green card — they won’t let you take the next step, which is the General Knowledge exam. In order to receive your CDL everyone needs to take a 50 question multiple choice exam. But the questions can be tricky and you only have an hour to pass. If you miss just 10 questions you’ll be out of luck and have to return to the DVS another day. How do you make sure you pass the first time? The answer is to study the official Minnesota commercial driver’s manual and to take our CDL General Knowledge practice tests, until you are confident you are ready to go. Our CDL General Knowledge practice tests have questions just like the real thing and along with hints and a score tracker, you’ll get the experience you need to succeed.
