If you’re planning to drive combination vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, on Montana’s highways, you’ll need a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This license allows you to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more when the towed unit’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeds 10,000 pounds (Montana Commercial Driver License Manual, Section 6). One of the main requirements is passing the Montana Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test.
Federal law requires you to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). You’ll also need to pass Montana’s CDL General Knowledge Test to receive your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), which must be held for at least 14 days before scheduling your behind-the-wheel test (in a combination vehicle).
The Montana multiple-choice Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test consists of 20 questions. To pass, you must answer at least 16 questions correctly (an 80 percent score). If you fail, you must wait at least one business day and pay a retesting fee. Our mission is to help ensure you pass the official exam on your first attempt!

Our Free Montana CDL Combination Practice Test is built to mirror the official exam format and give you instant feedback on every question. Our practice tests focus on the subjects most likely to appear on the real test, such as safe operation of combination vehicles, preventing trailer skids and jackknives, coupling and uncoupling procedures, air brake systems in tractor-trailers, and inspection requirements. We have multiple practice tests, so check out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/montana/mt-cdl-combination-test/.
Montana’s vast system of roadways includes Interstates 90 and 94 as well as U.S. Highways 2 and 93. These routes enable lucrative careers in freight, agriculture, construction, and energy transport. Major employers that hire Class A drivers include Coca-Cola Bottling, Cysco, Montana Department of Transportation, and XPO Logistics. Obtaining your Class A CDL is a smart move!
Because most combination vehicles use air brakes, you’ll also need to pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test to remove the restriction that would otherwise prohibit driving them. Prepare with our Montana Air Brakes Practice Tests: https://driving-tests.org/montana/mt-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
Consider adding endorsements to further broaden your career options, such as Hazardous Materials (H), Tanker (N), or Doubles/Triples (T). We have entire sets of Practice Tests for that endeavor. Check out one from our Hazardous Materials series: https://driving-tests.org/montana/mt-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/. Get started now in Big Sky Country!
