- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 MT commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for October 2025
More job opportunities and more money! Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is one of the best ways to achieve this. The U.S. government has deemed certain substances too dangerous to be transported without this endorsement, so drivers who qualify are in high demand. It’s a great way to set yourself apart from other drivers.
The steep grades and heavy winter snow in the Rockies portion of the Treasure State and the flatlands in the eastern plains offer plenty of opportunities for specially trained Hazmat drivers. The state relies on the transport of hazardous materials such as agricultural chemicals, oil and gas products, propane, mining explosives, and hazardous waste. Major employers include ConocoPhillips in Billings, ExxonMobil Refinery in Billings, Western States Equipment Company in Missoula, Phillips 66 in Laurel, and Montana Rail Link in Missoula. Each of these companies (and many more!) depends on certified drivers to move hazardous cargo safely across the Big Sky Country.
So, how do you get this endorsement? Due to the hazards involved in transporting such cargoes, there are three major hurdles. First, you must be sure that all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements have been completed. The second step is a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. Because TSA results can take weeks, it’s smart to begin that process immediately. While you wait, you can prepare for Montana’s MVD HazMat Knowledge Test. This exam covers federal regulations, safe handling practices, packaging requirements, quantity limits, and transport configurations. Montana’s test contains 30 questions, and you’ll need to score at least 80% (24 correct answers) to pass (Montana CDL Handbook 2025).
If this feels overwhelming, don’t worry. Our online practice tests mirror the official exam format so that when you sit for the official exam, you’ll know exactly what to expect and be comfortable right from the start. Our practice exams also give you immediate feedback on each response to ensure you learn as you go, instead of waiting to cram corrections at the end of the assessment. Also, this practice test is just one in our Montana-specific HazMat practice series. Try out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/montana/mt-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
