Fulfilling your dream of getting a commercial driver’s license in Nebraska is just a few steps away. But these steps are crucial to get right if you don’t want to waste time and money. Let’s start with the paperwork you need to gather together. The first piece you’ll need to get ahold of is a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. This can only be obtained from a licensed medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. The purpose of the certification is to prove that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. Certification generally lasts two years unless you have a condition that needs monitoring, like high blood pressure. Another piece of paperwork you need to show at the DMV is proof of citizenship or permanent residency. This requirement can be filled by a birth certificate, social security card or green card. Then, they also want you to show a valid driver’s license. Only once you have all that registered will you be able to take the test. The General Knowledge exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice test that you have only an hour to complete. It is tricky and takes a good deal of studying to get a passing grade (which is 40 out of 50). If you fail you have to come back another day so that’s not a great option. To succeed, you’ll want to get ahold of the official Nebraska Commercial Driver’s Manual and then take a number of practice tests. Our CDL General Knowledge practice exams have questions that are nearly identical, if not exactly the same as the ones you will face on the real thing and with the hints and tracking available, you’ll be able to go the Nebraska DMV confident that you’ll leave with your CDL.
