There are plenty of opportunities for commercial drivers in New York, but you won’t be able to drive vehicles equipped with air brakes unless you remove the “No Air Brake Equipped CMV” restriction from your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). To do this, you must pass a written knowledge test consisting of 25 questions on air brakes and a skills test in a vehicle equipped with air brakes.
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues the official CDL manual (New York CDL Handbook 2025), which contains useful information on various aspects of commercial driving (including air brakes). Although you should read this manual at least once, remember it is only a piece of the puzzle. On its own, it might not be enough to help you pass the air brakes knowledge test on your first attempt. The most determined students always make good use of all the resources available to them. If you want to succeed and receive a boost in your learning phase, we recommend training with our CDL Air Brakes practice tests. Each test consists of 25 questions; to pass, you’ll need to score at least 80%. Once you master each question and consistently obtain passing scores, you’ll be ready to take the official test at the DMV.
