If you are considering a career in commercial driving, now is the perfect time to start the licensing process. The first step is to get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). This permit is granted after submitting identification documents, paying the licensing fees, and passing the official general knowledge exam. If you plan to be engaged in non-excepted commerce, you must also pass a DOT medical examination.
There are 50 questions on the official general knowledge test. They will evaluate your understanding of commercial driving theory, which is thoroughly described in the official New York Commercial Driver’s Manual (New York CDL Handbook 2025). You should read this manual multiple times, and when you’re ready, you can use our Free New York CDL Permit Practice Test to evaluate your knowledge.
Once you get your CLP, you can practice driving commercial vehicles under the supervision of a full CDL holder. Since you are interested in driving combination vehicles, you must also pass the official combination vehicles knowledge test before you can practice driving with a combination vehicle. To assist with your preparation, we have created a series of practice tests based on Section 6 (Combination Vehicles) of the official Commercial Driver’s Manual. This practice test has 30 questions. Each question has multiple answer choices, but only one is correct.
