Becoming a commercial driver in the Empire State is a smart career move, but it demands preparation, patience, and perseverance. Companies like Western Express and Schneider are often hiring CDL holders who understand the responsibilities of truck driving. You could be moving freight across the Big Apple, doing regional runs with OTR opportunities, or making deliveries in the Northeast. Those interested in passenger transport can apply for a job with the MTA or seek employment with private carriers.
There are three CDL classes, and you’ll get the one most relevant to your profession. A Class A CDL allows you to drive any combination of vehicles where the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) is 26,001 lbs or more, and the towed vehicle is over 10,000 lbs. Class B CDL vehicles are single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, or any vehicle towing a trailer not exceeding 10,000 lbs. You’ll need a Class C CDL to drive vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver), or vehicles carrying hazardous materials that require placards.
