Passing the CDL Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test is required to earn a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and legally drive combination vehicles in the Tarheel State. Other requirements include passing a skills test (in a combination vehicle) and completing Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-approved provider as mandated by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.
The North Carolina Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting. According to the North Carolina CDL Manual, the original testing fee covers three attempts, so additional fees will follow if you do not pass within that number of attempts. Our Free North Carolina CDL Combination Practice Tests are designed to help you avoid these retakes and fees by employing scientifically proven strategies that improve learning retention and test performance.
Based on the most recent North Carolina CDL Manual, our practice test includes immediate feedback and hints, and mirrors the format and content of the real DMV exam. You’ll cover essential topics such as safe driving practices for combination vehicles, proper air brake usage, coupling and uncoupling procedures, inspection protocols, and the major parts of combination vehicles. Better than a typical study guide, our practice tests provide immediate feedback and hints if you get stuck on a certain topic or question.
Original questions by our teamBased on 2026 NC CDL Handbook
Questions are created and maintained by the Driving-Tests.org content team following our multi-layer editorial process and updated whenever the North CarolinaDMV changes its handbook or website information. Official sources we check:
With major trucking routes that include I-40 (stretching from Asheville to Wilmington), I-85 (connecting Charlotte, Greensboro, and Durham), and I-95 (running along the east), earning your Class A CDL increases your marketability across North Carolina. Major industries requiring combination-certified drivers include agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, construction, and retail. Major employers include Old Dominion Freight Line, NFI Industries, ABF Freight, Walmart Distribution Centers, and FedEx Freight.
To further increase your marketability and job options, we highly encourage you to earn endorsements such as Tanker (N), Hazardous Materials (H), and Doubles/Triples (T). Having these endorsements puts you well ahead of drivers without them. Also, if you haven’t done so already, you should take the Air Brakes Test. Most combination vehicles rely on air brake systems, and passing this test is required to remove the air brakes restriction from your CDL.

How we make exam‑like questions
We mirror recurring themes (e.g., right‑of‑way traps, sign look‑alikes) and use similar distractors and wording styles.
What we don’t do
We don’t collect or publish actual test items and we’re not affiliated with DMV.
