To legally operate double or triple trailer combinations, you must pass the Doubles/Triples (T) Knowledge Test, which adds the T Endorsement to your Class A CDL. This test covers a wide range of topics, which can be quite daunting when you begin studying. The CDL manual is the primary study resource. However, our scientifically designed AI-powered and targeted practice tests have proven to be a more effective way to prepare, much more so than the standard study guides you may find elsewhere.
The official North Carolina test includes 20 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass. If you fail, the North Carolina DMV requires a one-business-day waiting period before retesting. After three failed attempts, additional fees apply. Our Free North Carolina CDL Doubles/Triples (T) Knowledge Practice Tests are designed to help you succeed on your first try! They mimic the official exam format and include real-time feedback, hints, and AI-powered learning tools to boost retention and speed learning.

Questions are created and maintained by the Driving-Tests.org content team following our multi-layer editorial process and updated whenever the North CarolinaDMV changes its handbook or website information. Official sources we check:
All questions are derived from the latest North Carolina CDL Manual and cover topics like avoiding the “crack-the-whip” effect with steady steering, coupling and uncoupling, preventing jackknifing and rollovers, maintaining safe braking and following distances, and performing inspections.
Adding the T Endorsement to your CDL opens doors to higher-paying opportunities across the state. With major highways such as I-40, I-85, I-95, and I-77, and major hubs in cities like Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Fayetteville, North Carolina has plenty of demand for certified double/triple-trailer drivers.
Major carriers, including TMC Transportation, CRST, and Ruan Transportation, frequently hire drivers with this endorsement. You may also want to earn additional endorsements to further boost your CDL’s value, such as N (Tank Vehicles), H (Hazardous Materials), X (Combo of Tank + Hazmat), P (Passenger), and S (School Bus). Each requires its own knowledge test. We offer North Carolina-specific practice tests for all of them!
Because most double/triple trailers use air brakes, you must pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test and pass a skills test in a vehicle with air brakes. This removes the “L” or “Z” air brake restriction from your license. We provide Tar Heel State-specific Air Brakes Practice Tests to help you prepare.
This practice test is just one of our North Carolina CDL Doubles/Triples (T) Knowledge Practice Tests. Explore our full suite of CDL practice tests, including those for air brakes, combination vehicles, tankers, hazardous materials, passengers, and school buses.
