- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 OH commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for August 2025
As part of the licensing process to legally drive a combination vehicle (such as a tractor-trailer) in Ohio, you must pass the state’s Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. This 20-question multiple-choice exam is required to earn your Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). You must answer at least 16 questions correctly (80%) to pass. Failing the exam results in a waiting period of at least one business day and a new fee for each attempt.
Our Free Ohio CDL Combination Practice Test is designed to help you succeed on your first try. It mimics the format of the actual test and is based on the latest Ohio CDL Manual. Instead of a basic study guide as you will find in most resources, our practice tests provide instant feedback on each response, hints as needed, and a much more organized and scientifically proven method for reinforcing key concepts and increasing retention.
With this practice test, you’ll cover safe driving practices for combination vehicles (including methods to prevent jackknifing and trailer skids), air brake systems and proper braking techniques for combination vehicles, correct coupling and uncoupling procedures, and detailed tractor-trailer inspection checklists.
In addition to passing the official knowledge test, Ohio also requires completion of Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a provider listed in the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR). Once you’ve completed ELDT and held a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days, you can take the CDL skills test (which must be done in a representative combination vehicle).
Earning your Class A CDL opens the door for more truck driving jobs across Ohio. The state relies on skilled drivers to transport freight along major interstates like I-70, I-75, and I-71, especially in the manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics industries. Major organizations like Maverick Transportation, TMC Transportation, Schneider National, and FedEx Freight require Class A drivers, making this certification very lucrative for drivers.
Important: Most combination vehicles in Ohio use air brakes, so it’s highly recommended that you prepare for and pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test as well. Without it, your CDL will carry an “L” or “Z” restriction, which will prevent you from operating vehicles with air brakes. Our Ohio Air Brakes Practice Tests will ensure you’re fully prepared.
