Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is likely one of the most lucrative steps you can take to expand your job opportunities and boost your earning potential in Pennsylvania. Without it, many well-paying positions will be out of reach because you’ll lack the ability to legally participate in them. Adding the HazMat endorsement sets you apart from drivers without it and adds a valuable versatility to your abilities as a professional driver.
In the Keystone State, Hazmat-certified drivers transport gasoline, petroleum products, industrial gasses, flammable liquids and solids, and agricultural chemicals. Major employers rely on drivers with this endorsement, including PPG Industries in Pittsburgh, Sunoco in Philadelphia, Air Products and Chemicals in Allentown, BASF in Wyandotte, and Westinghouse Electric in Cranberry Township. These industries depend on Hazmat-endorsed drivers and often pay a premium to obtain their services.
How do you obtain the endorsement? The process involves three major steps: completion of all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background review, and a DOT knowledge test. Once ELDT requirements are met, the TSA requires fingerprinting and a background check, which can take several weeks. During that time, you should prepare for the DOT HazMat Knowledge Exam, which covers federal regulations, handling procedures, packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations. You’ll need at least an 80% score on Pennsylvania’s 30-question test to pass (Pennsylvania CDL Handbook 2025).
