In the Ocean State, becoming a school bus driver is no small task, but our team of experts has exactly what you need to navigate the process. Before you can transport students, you must add both the Passenger and School Bus endorsements to your CDL. This requires that you pass all the corresponding knowledge exams, as well as a Skills Test in a representative school bus. The Rhode Island DMV CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Exam requires a minimum passing score of 80%, and the topics you’ll need to learn ahead of time are numerous. To cut through the fluff you’ll find in other resources, including outdated study guides and static pdfs, our content experts have tailored a series of Rhode Island CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Practice Tests to help you pass on your first attempt.
In Rhode Island, all CDL and endorsement exams are administered only at the DMV’s main office in Cranston, and you are allowed only one test attempt each day. If you do not pass, you must wait five business days before retesting, so be sure to prepare with our interactive AI-powered practice tests. Our series of practice materials includes a Challenge Bank™ of questions that remembers any you miss and presents them again until you answer them correctly, thus making certain you have all the material completely learned. Once you’ve aced this practice test, try another from our series: https://driving-tests.org/rhode-island/ri-cdl-school-bus-practice-test/.
The official School Bus Endorsement Exam covers "danger zones" surrounding the bus. It requires that you understand the protocol for proper mirror usage and student loading and unloading procedures. You must also be constantly aware of passengers getting on and off the bus, and you must manage student behavior. The test also evaluates your understanding of railroad crossings and emergency situations. You’ll need to understand how to inspect the bus at the end of each route, checking for damage or children still aboard. All of this is covered in our practice tests.
As you move forward, remember that the School Bus endorsement is only one part of what you’ll need. You must also pass the Passenger endorsement exam; we have practice tests for that as well: https://driving-tests.org/rhode-island/ri-cdl-passenger-vehicles-practice-test/. Many buses are equipped with air brakes, so you may need to pass the Air Brakes Test and take your Skills Test in an air brake-equipped bus. Prepare for the air brakes portion here: https://driving-tests.org/rhode-island/ri-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
