Before you can take the driver’s seat, you must fully understand commercial driving theory.
The first step is passing the official general knowledge exam, which is required for a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). This exam includes 50 multiple-choice questions based on the official South Carolina Commercial Driver License Manual (South Carolina CDL Handbook 2025). To pass, you must score 80% or higher. To get a Class A CDL, you must also pass the official combination vehicles knowledge exam. You should also pass the air brakes knowledge test to drive trucks equipped with air brakes.
