To get a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) in South Carolina, you must first meet the basic eligibility requirements. You must be at least 18 for intrastate driving (within the state), or 21 for interstate driving (across state lines). You cannot transport hazardous materials or carry passengers until you turn 21. All applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, provide identification documents, pay the licensing fees, and pass a vision screening. If you plan to engage in non-excepted commerce, you must also pass a medical examination administered by a certified medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
To get a CLP (Commercial Learner’s Permit), you must pass the official General Knowledge Exam. This test has 50 multiple-choice questions based on the official Commercial Driver License Manual (South Carolina CDL Handbook 2026).
