Free South Carolina CDL Permit Practice Test: General Knowledge 2025

  • Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements.

In the United States, there are three classes of Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs). A Class A CDL is typically for operating large combination vehicles, such as semi-trucks and tractor-trailers. A Class B CDL is typically for operating large single-unit vehicles, including large buses, box trucks, and most dump trucks. A Class C CDL is typically for operating smaller commercial vehicles that transport hazardous materials or at least 16 occupants (including the driver), such as small buses (including shuttle buses) or small trucks carrying hazardous materials.

No matter which class of CDL you plan to get, you must meet a series of requirements. Notably, you must pass an official skills test, which includes basic vehicle maneuvers, a pre-trip inspection test, and a road test. This will show that you can operate a commercial vehicle safely. To pass this test, you must practice commercial driving under supervision until you’re consistently good at it. And to practice commercial driving, you’ll need a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

To obtain a CLP, you must also meet certain requirements, including passing the official General Knowledge test on commercial driving theory. The questions on this test are based on the official South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License Manual (South Carolina CDL Handbook 2025). However, if you’ve decided that you need to do something more than just read the manual to pass the knowledge test, you’ve certainly come to the right place!

This free South Carolina CDL permit practice test is based on the official CDL manual, just like the official knowledge test. It’s up to date as of November, 2025. There are 50 multiple-choice practice questions on such topics as basic vehicle maneuvers, driving emergencies, stopping distance, and vehicle components. Each question comes with an available hint to gently guide you to the correct answer, and an explanation of the correct answer. You can also ask our automated assistant for even more help. What this test doesn’t come with is a time limit. Take your time and learn the material addressed by this practice test.

Once you obtain a CDL and the endorsements you need for the vehicles and cargoes you plan to drive, the world of commercial driving will open up for you. Much of South Carolina is served by public transit buses for both commuting and tourism. The Port of Charleston is one of the busiest container seaports on the East Coast. There are many kinds of truck operations there: dray (short distance), over-the-road (long distance), container transport, hazardous materials transport, and overdimensional (oversize) transport. Seaports, like airports, are secure areas. You’ll need to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.

I passed my hazmat test with a 100.
I highly recommend this website. They have the CDL manual, by the testee state, to read or download and a three hour video course. The video course essentially covers the same topics as the CDL manual but in more detail. There's five practice exams, marathon exam that covers all 190 questions, and the DDS hazmat simulator. There's a challenge bank that keeps all the question that the testee might struggle on.

Finished all test below 45 mins.
I tried to take the CDL knowledge test and endorsements with only reading the drivers study book from DMV and failed miserably. I had to find something quick to pass these test. I found driving-tests.org and what a great website. I played around with the practice tests and I said to myself this is just like the DMV test. So I went ahead and studied for 2 days getting 100% on all the practice tests and exams. I took the test at DMV with confidence and pass all 5 test to get my permit and the endorsements plus my real ID.

5 STARS This IS NOT Fake NEWS!
I decided to roll the dice and try to pass before then. I took my CDL exam on Feb 3rd. I also took the School Bus, Passenger and Air Brake endorsement exams. I am happy to say that i passed all the exams with flying colors! I literally got 100% on the general knowledge test. I am generally a very good test taker but I can assure you that without this website and all of the practice tests, I would have failed miserably. The CDL book from DMV is awful. You cannot read that and think you're gonna pass. Just an FYI: I tried some of the free practice tests online from other sites. They are NOT the same as the test questions on the real exam. The practice questions on this site were mostly identical to the real questions on the test. You will not regret it.

I gave driving-tests.org 5 stars….
(I wish there was something higher than 5 stars) because the program was very user friendly and I had fun learning. I started it eleven days before my written CLP (commercial learner permit) tests for Class B which included general knowledge, air brake, and passengers endorsement. I took the tests on October 25th and passed with flying colors so I now have my CLP with "P" endorsement. I had the DMV manual and it was so overwhelming to me so that is why I did a Google search for CDL tests and I found your company.
