In South Dakota, the responsibility of transporting students is taken very seriously. Multiple requirements must be met before you ever get behind the wheel of a bus. You must pass the School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Test and a skills examination conducted in a school bus (as well as obtaining the Passenger "P" Endorsement and meeting other federal, state, and local requirements). To pass your knowledge exams, you must score an 80% or higher, and the materials covered are extensive. Our South Dakota CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Practice Tests reflect the structure and tricky wording of the official exam and focus on actual tested material, eliminating unnecessary fluff and helping you concentrate on what truly matters. The interactive CDL manual works alongside our state-of-the-art Challenge Bank™, which recycles missed questions until they are mastered. At the end of each practice session, you’ll receive performance tracking that highlights areas needing additional attention. Our AI-powered, interactive practice tests trump outdated study guides and static pdfs and ensure you pass the official exam on your first attempt. The official S Endorsement Knowledge Exam puts a lot of emphasis on the highest-risk aspect of school bus operation: the loading and unloading of students. The areas surrounding the bus are deemed "danger zones," so you are expected to master mirror usage and maintain awareness of blind spots. You are also expected to monitor student movement (approaching, boarding, and exiting the bus) at all times. Situations that you might not think of, like loose clothing or backpack straps getting caught on handrails, are specifically covered in the review materials. Other topics you are expected to understand include controlled stopping, proper vehicle securing procedures, and student behavior management. You must be prepared for evacuation scenarios, changing road and weather conditions, and hazards such as railroad crossings. You should also note that, even with a Passenger and/or School Bus endorsement, if you are operating under a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), you are prohibited from carrying students at any time.
In addition to the School Bus endorsement, you must also pass the Passenger "P" Endorsement Knowledge Test. Check out our Passenger "P" Endorsement Practice Tests here (where the average first-time score is 65%!): https://driving-tests.org/south-dakota/sd-cdl-passenger-vehicles-practice-test/. Because many large school buses are equipped with air brakes, preparing for the Air Brakes Knowledge Test is equally important: https://driving-tests.org/south-dakota/sd-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
