TN CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Test 2025

  • Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements

Passing the Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) General Knowledge Exam is required to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). To pass, you must be prepared for questions about pre-trip inspections. Once you have your CLP in hand, Tennessee mandates that all new CDL applicants complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a registered training provider before taking the skills test. Once complete and you’ve held your CLP for at least 14 days, you must pass the Tennessee Pre-Trip Inspection Test as part of the skills exam for a CDL. This test makes certain that drivers can identify and check critical vehicle components to prevent breakdowns and accidents. Our Tennessee CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Tests cover all necessary topics related to pre-trip inspections and ensure you are prepared for that part of the knowledge exam.

The CDL skills test is divided into three parts: pre-trip inspection test, basic control skills test, and road test. The federally mandated pre-trip inspection test (regulations 49 CFR § 392.7 and 49 CFR § 396.13) and the other two parts of the test must be passed for a CDL. In Tennessee, if you fail one of these sections, you only need to retake the failed part. Credit for any segments passed, however, will expire when your CLP expires (in 365 days). The Tennessee CDL Manual lists some exemptions for bus drivers. School bus (S) and passenger (P) endorsement applicants may be exempt from the engine compartment pre-trip inspection but will receive “K” (Intrastate Only) and “S1” (School Bus Only) restrictions. These restrictions can be removed by passing the CDL road test and paying the required fees before CLP expiration.

You’ll need to memorize the Seven-Step Inspection Method for both the Tennessee CDL General Knowledge Exam and the CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Test. This process includes thoroughly checking the vehicle’s engine compartment, cab controls, lights, tires, brakes, suspension, and cargo securement. You must point to, touch, and name each component and explain why it is being inspected.

The practice test is based on the most recent Tennessee CDL manual (Tennessee CDL Handbook 2025) and contains 20 multiple-choice questions, including pre-trip inspection prompts. Each response elicits a detailed explanation that helps you pass the official knowledge test on your first attempt.
